There Is No Best Free VPN, Only Limits That Fit or Do Not

A free VPN’s limits are not obstacles bolted onto the product — they are the product specification, because the limits are how the arrangement is funded. That flips the question. Instead of asking which free service is best, ask which set of limits fits what you were going to do, and treat a free service that appears to have no limits at all as the one requiring an explanation, since something has to be covering the recurring cost of carrying your traffic.

Nothing here is a recommendation and no service is named. What follows is how to read a free offer as a specification.

Why the limits are the honest part

Moving traffic and holding usable exit addresses cost money continuously, in rough proportion to use. A free tier is therefore a decision about how much of that recurring cost the operator will absorb per person, and the limits are that decision written down. Seen this way, prominent limits are reassuring rather than stingy: they show the arithmetic is being managed openly.

The awkward case is the offer with no stated ceiling on anything. That does not mean something sinister is happening, but it does mean the cost is being recovered from a source that has not been described to you, and you are entitled to find out what it is before you route a device’s traffic through it. The limits worth reading before you install

Most free offers constrain some subset of these. Work out which ones bite for you, in advance, because discovering them mid-task is how a free tool becomes an expensive afternoon.

A data allowance. The headline constraint, and the one people misjudge, because a tunnel carries everything — including the background chatter of an operating system and every automatic update — not just the browsing you were thinking of. An allowance sized for occasional use disappears quickly under whole-device routing.

A short list of exit locations. Fewer places to appear from, and often no choice at all. If a specific exit region is the reason you wanted the tunnel, this limit can make the offer useless to you regardless of everything else.

Coverage of one device. Free tiers commonly permit a single simultaneous connection. That is fine for a laptop and irrelevant to a household.

Lower priority when the exit is busy. Not a stated number, usually, but a scheduling decision. It appears as unsteadiness at the times you are most likely to be using it.

How the second address family is treated. Whether name resolution is inside the tunnel. If the client leaves lookups to whatever resolver your network handed you, then the list of names you asked for stays with the party you were trying to withhold it from. This is the limit that most often defeats the entire purpose of installing anything.

Whether the client is the same software as the paid one. Sometimes it is the identical application with features disabled, sometimes a separate, thinner build. The second case tends to be where protective behaviour on disconnection is missing.

The three shapes a free offer usually takes

Described by what their limits look like, since that is what you can see before committing anything.

A capped tier of a service whose paying customers fund it. Recognisable by limits that are specific, prominent and slightly frustrating on purpose, and by the existence of a paid tier that removes exactly those limits. The constraints exist to make upgrading attractive, which is a comprehensible arrangement.

A time-boxed trial of the full product. Recognisable by the absence of feature limits and the presence of a clock. Useful precisely because it is unlimited — it is the only free arrangement that tells you how the real product behaves — and useless as an ongoing solution.

A project funded from outside its users. Grants, donations, an institution, or a parent product you already pay for. Recognisable by published information about who pays and why, and often by limits that are technical rather than commercial.

If an offer matches none of these three shapes, that is the finding. It is not proof of anything bad; it is an unanswered question about who is paying, and you can decline to answer it by choosing something whose arrangement you can see.

Reading an offer in ten minutes

  1. Find the limits page, not the landing page, and write the numbers down for yourself.
  2. Check whether a paid tier exists and what it unlocks. The gap tells you what the free tier is for.
  3. Look for who the operator is — a named entity you can look up, appearing consistently in the terms, the policy and the app listing.
  4. Read the terms for anything about sharing your connection or resources. If it is there, it is meant literally.
  5. Confirm the download source is the operator’s own published one rather than a plausible search result.
  6. After installing, verify the mechanics yourself: what resolver you end up using, whether both address families are carried, and what happens when the tunnel drops.

Step six is the one almost nobody performs, and it is the only step that tests the product rather than the prose.

When a free tier is the right specification

If your requirement is a single device, occasional sessions, no particular exit region, and nothing you would be upset to have interrupted, the limits above will not touch you and there is no reason to pay for headroom you will not use. Telling somebody who cannot pay to go without any protection on a network they do not control is bad advice, not caution.

The mismatch is not about virtue. It appears when a specification sized for occasional use is asked to cover continuous, multi-device, region-specific or load-bearing work — and every one of those mismatches is predictable from the limits page before you install anything. Choosing one would require us to have run these offers long enough to see them hit their limits, on our own connections, and we have not. A ranked list of free services would also be the least defensible thing this site could publish, because the readers most likely to act on it are the ones with the least room to absorb a bad outcome, and the ordering would rest on nothing but other people’s copy.

Reading the specification is a skill that survives the offers changing. A list of names does not.
